How to Care for Your Braces
Proper care ensures the best results and a comfortable treatment experience. Follow these essential tips to keep your braces in great shape.
Daily Cleaning Tips
- Brush your teeth after every meal using a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste
- Use an interdental brush or floss threader to clean between brackets and under wires
- Rinse with an antibacterial mouthwash to reduce plaque and prevent gum inflammation
- Carry a travel toothbrush kit for cleaning on the go
- Replace your toothbrush every 3 months or when bristles become frayed
Foods to Avoid
- Hard foods like nuts, hard candy, ice, and popcorn that can break brackets
- Sticky foods such as caramel, gum, and taffy that can get caught in braces
- Crunchy foods like chips, pretzels, and raw carrots (cut into smaller pieces instead)
- Chewy foods like bagels and tough meats that put excessive pressure on brackets
- Sugary snacks and sodas that increase the risk of tooth decay and staining
Comfort & Pain Relief
- Apply orthodontic wax to brackets or wires that irritate your cheeks or lips
- Take over-the-counter pain relievers as directed after adjustments
- Eat soft foods like yogurt, smoothies, and mashed potatoes during the first few days
- Rinse with warm salt water to soothe sore gums and reduce inflammation
- Use a cold compress on the outside of your mouth to reduce swelling
